Laptops or notebooks come in many different shapes, sizes and flavours. It is often difficult to
know which one to buy. The first thing to decide is the manufacturer. I recommend Asus, I have used
their motherboards in all my desktop PCs and their build quality and reliability is excellent. The same
applies to their laptops, and over the last few years they have established themselves as one of the best
names in the business.
Secondly comes the specification, I recommend an Intel i3, i5 or i7 processor, with a minimum of 4GB RAM.
You will find the Intel i3 laptops cost around £300 to £400. Whereas the i5 and i7 ones can easily break the
£1000 barrier. For this reason I believe there is a solution that offers fantastic value and turns a budget laptop
into a power laptop.
For the cost of an Intel i3 powered Asus laptop (Asus X55C or X501A) at around £325 + £200 worth of upgrades you can
have an incredibly powerful laptop for a fraction of the cost on an i7 or a MacBook!
The procedure:
- Upgrade RAM from 4GB to 8GB
- Replace supplied hard disk drive with 128GB solid state drive
- Replace Windows 8 with Windows 7 (or operating system of customer's choice)
The result is an incredibly fast laptop. In the case of one installed with Windows 7, the boot up time is only 15
seconds! Applications open in an instant, you need never suffer a slow laptop again.
